Nottingham needed three games to win the Section 3 title. It won them by a combined 32-3.
Bayonne needed three to win Section 2. It won them by 36-4, and not one of the three lasted the full six innings.
Those are the two teams that meet at 8 o’clock Friday night in Cresskill, in the second game of the New Jersey Little League state tournament. Between them, across six games this month, they have given up seven runs.
The bracket
Four teams, double elimination, five days. Game 1 is Cresskill against Blackwood Kiwanis at 5:30 p.m. Friday; Game 2 is Bayonne against Nottingham at 8. Saturday puts the two losers together at 1 p.m. and the two winners at 3:30. Sunday at 1 pairs whoever survives the elimination game with whoever loses the winners’ bracket. The championship is Monday at 7 p.m., with an if-necessary game at the same time Tuesday.
It is all at Cresskill Little League, 222 Piermont Road, with parking at Cresskill High School on Lincoln Drive. The state champion goes on to the Metro Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, against the champions of New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Whoever comes out of Bristol goes to South Williamsport for the Little League World Series, Aug. 19 to 30, as one of ten American entries in a twenty-team field.
The two kinds of team in this bracket
Run differential is the first thing anyone reads in a youth tournament and the least useful thing to read on its own. A twelve-run win over an overmatched opponent and a one-run win over a good one are the same line in the standings and nothing alike in what they tell you.
By that measure this bracket has divided itself in half — and, by accident of the draw, divided itself down the middle of Friday’s schedule.
Nottingham. Hamilton Square, District 12, Mercer County’s entry. Opened the sectional with 13-1 over North Howell, then beat Clark twice, 12-0 and 7-2. Three games, three wins, 32 runs for and three against. The 7-2 is the one that repays attention: it is the only game all month in which an opponent finished within five runs of them, and Nottingham still won it without visible difficulty.
Bayonne. District 7, and the most emphatic of the four. Beat Palisades Park/Leonia 12-1, then Rutherford twice, 12-0 and 13-3. All three ended early under the mercy rule, which is worth translating: no opponent stayed close enough for long enough to make Bayonne play a complete game. Whether that is a verdict on Bayonne or on Section 2 is the question the 8 o’clock game begins to answer.
Cresskill. The host, District 4 champion, and the only one of the four to arrive carrying a loss. It beat Sparta 12-0, edged East Hanover/Florham Park 3-2, then swept Wayne American 2-1 and 6-0 for the title. That is a 4-1 record containing two games decided by a single run, both of them won. Nobody else in this bracket has that on their record twice.
Blackwood Kiwanis. Camden County, Section 4, unbeaten. Beat Cherry Hill Atlantic 9-0, then took the final round twice, 2-1 and 6-4. It is Blackwood’s second final four in three years, and like Cresskill it has already won a game in which one mistake would have ended its summer.
So Friday at 5:30 puts the two teams that have proved they can win a tight game against each other, and Friday at 8 puts together the two that have not yet had to. Double elimination will ask that question of somebody before Monday night.
Bergen County’s turn
The hosting is a small piece of county history in its own right. This is the first time in thirteen years that a Bergen County league has staged the state final four; Wallington was the last, in 2013. For a county with as much youth baseball in it as Bergen, thirteen years is a long wait for four days of this.
What is actually at stake
Almost nothing, and a great deal. There is no prize money and no ranking table. There is a bus to Bristol, and past Bristol a tournament that puts eleven- and twelve-year-olds on national television for a fortnight in August. Four New Jersey towns have five days to get on it. By Monday night, three of them will be finished.
Mercer County readers have the straightforward interest in the 8 o’clock game. Nottingham carries the county into it, in a summer that has already sent seven MCALL sides into American Legion district play. More county and statewide coverage is in the Sports section.
