Closings

This small-batch baking company has shut its doors after nearly three years in business. E. Holland Sundries started out selling goods like pretzels and pastries at farmers’ markets and a local grocer before operating its own storefront. In late October, founder Shannon Phillips announced in an Instagram post that the shop would be closing after Thanksgiving. “It’s been a two person baking operation for almost a year and half now and we came to a crossroads,” she wrote. “[…] We made the decision to close so that we can both have a quality of life that we are not necessarily used to.”

St. Joseph Regional High School announced a "significant shift in leadership with its football program with the departure of Dan Marangi" as head football coach in a release on Friday morning.

“After much self reflection and time spent with family, I have decided to step down as the head football coach to spend more time with my wife and beautiful children,” Marangi said in the release.

Marangi had been the Green Knights' coach since 2020, and the program went 24-15 during his tenure. They won six games in all four seasons he coached the program, and were eliminated from the playoffs by Seton Hall Prep in the Non-Public A quarterfinals the last two seasons.

St. Joseph last won a state title in 2018, when Augie Hoffman was the coach.

“We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition," athletic director Reginald Sainte-Rose said in the release. "While we are grateful for all of Coach Marangi’s service to our student-athletes, this is a crucial step towards ensuring the future success of the program."

The school has formed a "dedicated committee" to select the new coach, according to the release.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to Coach Dan Marangi for his unwavering dedication to our football program," principal Michael Bruno said in the release. "Coach Marangi has not only been a coach but a mentor, inspiring our players to reach their fullest potential both on and off the field. We want to express our deepest gratitude to the players, their parents, and the entire school community for their unwavering support."

Marangi was just the 10th coach in school history. He joined the Green Knights staff as an assistant coach under Augie Hoffmann in 2016 after almost 20 years as defensive coordinator at Don Bosco. Marangi is a Don Bosco alum.

When Hoffmann left to join Greg Schiano's staff at Rutgers after the 2019 season, Marangi got the job after a long search. It was his first head coaching job.

Marangi went 0-4 against Bergen Catholic in his tenure, but 3-2 against Don Bosco.

Hoffmann is now an assistant coach at Columbia, but his name will certainly be talked about for this opening.

MONTVALE – For the past month, there's been an ongoing debate over the best wrestling team in the state.

On Sunday, it will be settled for good.

The matchup that seemed inevitable from the start is now set in stone with top-ranked St. Joseph and No. 2 Delbarton facing off in a heavyweight showdown in the Non-Public A final at Rutgers.

The Green Knights held up their end by polishing off St. Peter's Prep, 40-18, on Thursday in a drawn-out, blood-soaked semifinal in Montvale.

Delbarton punched its ticket by blowing out Christian Brothers Academy, 49-13 out in Morris County.

For the Green Knights, their trip to Piscataway will be a chance to win their second straight state championship and prove that their improbable win over Delbarton in last year's final wasn't a one-off. And if the Green Knights (12-0) stay on top in the 1:30 p.m. match, it would make them only the third Bergen County team to finish as an unbeaten state champ.

"Some people say we got lucky last year, but none of us think that at all," senior Frank DiBella said. "I think we're ready to make a statement and do it again."

Sailing through the semifinal

All season long, the Green Knights could only wonder what their lineup would look like at full strength. It could finally happen on Sunday with UNC commit and two-time state medalist Aidan Schlett hoping to return for the first time since December. Coach Tom Farinaro said his 215-pounder weighed in on Thursday and could have wrestled if needed.

"When we're healthy and we have our full team, we can compete with anybody," Farinaro said. "Tonight we had a nice match. The kids wrestled hard against a really good team. I'm proud of how everyone competed tonight."

The Green Knights still managed to win nine bouts against St. Peter's Prep, including four by pin: Adrian DeJesus (132), Ryan Burton (175), AJ DiGiovanni (190) and Rocco Dellagatta (285).

One of the other heroes was Vincent Paino, who scraped out a pivotal win early on at 126. Paino rode out Laudan Henry in the third period and avoided a last-second reversal en route to a 3-1 decision. It was part of a 12-0 Green Knights run to open up the meet.

"We're starting to see our team peaking now at the end of the season and that's something that we talk about all the time," Farinaro said. "Every year."

Measuring up the competition

While St. Joseph was a cut above everyone else in Bergen County this year, the inevitable challenge from Delbarton provided a push in more ways than one.

Some eyebrows were raised in Montvale when a major media outlet stripped the Green Knights of their No. 1 ranking, even as the unbeaten returning champs.

"I don't agree with it and most of our team doesn't," DiBella said. "I don't think any of St. Joe's agrees with it. I don't see why we're ranked second. But it is what it is. It just puts a fire in our belly. We're ready to go come Sunday."

St. Joseph was expected to wrestle Delbarton at the Catholic School Duals last month, but backed out on the eve of the tournament due to injuries and illness.

On paper, not much separates their lineups. Both have 11 ranked wrestlers and four in the No. 1 spot. Both finished near each other at the Beast of the East and Powerade tournaments.

The 2023 meeting at Jersey Mike's Arena gave the Green Knights their first state title in a quarter-century and a sense of validation.

"I think we come in with a lot more confidence and belief in ourself," Paino said. "That moment for us was a big realization of what we're capable of and what we do here."

On Sunday, there will be no more comparing lineups, combing through tournament scores and wondering how a dual meet would have turned out.

Just one match for all the marbles.

"Forever, it was Bergen Catholic and the last bunch of years it's been Delbarton," Farinaro said. "So getting back in that conversation of being one of the best teams in the state is exciting for the program and the school. So we'll go down Sunday and see what we can do. They're a great team with a lot of really, really good kids. We'll give it our best effort."

YOUNGSTOWN (Ohio) – Will Barbieri wasn’t sure which season-opening road trip he enjoyed more, but they both ended just the way he wanted: with convincing wins for St. Joseph Regional.

“I can’t really choose,” said the Green Knights junior safety. “I loved both.”

A week after going down to North Carolina and posting an impressive win over Christ School, the Green Knights went west to Ohio Saturday and pounded Michigan power Cass Tech, 49-14, at Stambaugh Stadium on the campus of Youngstown State.

The Green Knights scored touchdowns on five straight possessions in the first half, with quarterback Patrick Grusser throwing for three and running for one. St. Joe’s also forced two turnovers and blocked a punt in the second half with Jovon Williams scooping it up and running it back 11 yards.

“I like the way we’re playing, we’re playing fast,” said Green Knights coach Dan Marangi. “I like the way we are getting after it. I told them to be relentless in everything we do.”

Cass Tech features standout quarterback/receiver Corey Sadler Jr. but the Green Knights defense held him in check except for one burst in the first half, when he caught three passes on a single drive to set up a score.

What it means

The Green Knights, No. 2 in the USA Today Network New Jersey Non-Public Top 10, are 2-0 and may have fixed a porous defense that was their undoing last year. Last year, the Green Knights allowed 14 or less points only twice all season. This year it’s already happened twice.

All throughout the off-season, Marangi said improving the defense was the goal. Saturday, they only allowed 164 yards and one score – Cass Tech’s other TD came on a kickoff return.

“Everyone wants to run to the ball,” said Barbieri. “Last year, I don’t really think we had that. Our defense is really flying around making plays.”

Marangi is pleased, but said there’s still work to do.

“I think just the attitude they are playing with, play fast, play physical, that’s what we want our M.O. to be,” Marangi said. “We have a long way to go. I like what I have seen so far, but we have to clean up some of the fundamentals, and if we don’t clean it up it will come back to bite us.”

Turning point

There was an interesting sequence early in the second quarter with St. Joe’s up 21-0 and Cass Tech going for it on fourth-and-one at their own 29. First the Technicians (yes, that’s their nickname) tried to get the Green Knights to jump offsides. Then they called timeout.

Cass Tech got back out on the field and then the Green Knights called timeout. During the break, Marangi told the defense to watch for Sadler Jr. on a quarterback iso. Sure enough, Sadler Jr. tried to run but Green Knights star defensive back Jahmir Joseph cut him down for a loss. A few plays later Yasin Willis scored to make it 28-0 for St. Joe’s.

The scene

Marangi said after the game that Green Knights talented wide receiver John Forster was held out with an injury, but would be back next week.

Back-up quarterback Monte Krkuti threw a touchdown pass to Mekhi Rossignol in the third quarter.

The Green Knights are 2-0 for the first time since 2019.

This was St. Joe’s first trip for a game to Ohio since 2014 when they lost to St. Edward 42-0.

The Green Knights finally return home to face rival Don Bosco Saturday at Karcich Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

“It’s always a fight,” Marangi said about facing a school where he was a defensive coordinator for almost two decades. “It will go down to the wire and be a physical, smashmouth game.”
