But Wang and others in the industry still believe in the value of teens learning programming skills, especially in concert with familiarizing themselves with relevant AI tools that can potentially help maximize those skills.

“At the end of the day, 6-0’s a win. It’s a win in the book. And we got it on our record,” said sophomore Jesse Brophy. “But we know this game wasn’t pretty. We got to clean it up in practice this week.”

“It’s always good to put more points on the board, but we put a zero for them on the scoreboard so it feels great,” added senior defensive back Alex Stucke, “all that matters is we came out victorious.”

That defense delivered when it mattered most for New Milford. Jeremy Friedberg tackled Secaucus’ Chase Berckes short of the first down marker to force a turnover on downs at the 6 with 10:59 remaining.

Stucke later pulled down an interception with 2:08 remaining to seemingly put the game away for the Knights. And while New Milford ultimately couldn’t run out the clock completely, Stucke’s 33 yard punt against an all-out rush, forced Secaucus (2-1) to go 49 yards in 18 seconds.

Out of timeouts, the final Secaucus possession failed to gain traction as Brophy came around the edge and sacked Berckes from behind on what proved to be the game’s last play.

“Coach Straub told me right away, blitz off the edge and I was lining up to just go prevent, but he was like, go and I just have to make a play for my team and I just got to go to work,” said Brophy. “We’re 2-2, we got to get better, but that’s a big win.”

In the first quarter, Brophy recovered a fumble on the Secaucus 4. Jackson and New Milford quickly cashed in on the turnover when he ran for a TD on the next play with 4:01 left in the period.

New Milford had the ball in Secaucus territory on five of its six possessions, but was inevitably turned away by an equally resilient Patriots defense.

Brandon Vega forced and recovered two first half fumbles for Secaucus. The Patriots followed the second with a 12-play, 44-yard drive that ultimately ran out of time as Berckes completed a pass to Vega, who lateralled it back to Joseph Pinto, who was brought down at the 4 with no time left.

Earlier in the second quarter, Secaucus had another drive into the red zone stall at the 10 and then was unable to get off what would have been a 27-yard field goal attempt.

“This was a big game,” said Stucke. “We had to win it and every practice during the week, everyone was focused, everyone was locked in.”

Both teams are now 1-1 in the NJIC Meadowlands Division. Vega had six receptions for 60 yards for a Secaucus team that won its previous six games dating back to last season.

Jackson ran for 86 yards on 17 carries to lead a New Milford offense, which was held back by nine penalties. He also had eight tackles on defense, while twin brother Luke Jackson had a team-high 10 tackles.

“My dad used to tell me the sign of a good baseball pitcher was somebody who could win without their best stuff,” Straub said. “We got the win tonight against a very well-coached team with good players, without playing our best. I’m waiting for us to do that. We have not put our best together yet, so we’ll get back to work tomorrow and do what we have to do.”

A wildfire is burning in Passaic County, New Jersey. Fire officials say the Buckabear Wildfire has spread to 160 acres in West Milford Township and is currently 40% contained.

Winds cooperating with firefighting efforts

A helicopter was seen Wednesday scooping water from the Clinton Reservoir to help fight the blaze.

The Forest Fire Service's Tyler Niedergall said winds have been working in firefighters' favor.

"Thankfully, right here, we have the reservoir that still has water so they can dip real close and bring water right to the fire," Niedergall said.

Officials say the fire started Tuesday at the Newark Watershed.

"In between Buckabear Pond and Clinton Road, there is a hill that goes down to the water's edge. The back side of this, the fire started down there and burned up the hill," Niedergall said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

N.J. wildfires so far this summer

The state's Forest Fire Service has battled several wildfires this year, including one in the Wharton State Forest in June, another in Hackettstown in May and the massive Jones Road Wildfire back in April.

The Jones Road fire burned for weeks and forced thousands of residents and businesses in Ocean County to evacuate. A 17- and 19-year-old were charged with starting the blaze after not putting out a bonfire, prosecutors said.

At the time, authorities said the state had seen 662 wildfires and 16,572 acres burned so far this year, compared to 310 fires and 315 acres burned during the same period last year. Officials warned the drought conditions were "deeply serious," especially in the southern half of the state.

Wednesday's fire danger level was listed as "moderate" for northern, central and southern parts of the state.

NEW MILFORD − New Milford looked much sharper at the start, understandable considering Bergenfield is still adjusting after the death of its longtime coach.

The Knights scored the first two touchdowns in the first half and held on for a season-opening 14-6 victory on Aug. 28.

“We came out of the locker room all thrilled up,” New Milford junior receiver Brady Gilchrist said. "We got a great speech from coach [Bill] Straub, and we knew how much this game meant.”

New Milford junior quarterback Max Kenny threw an opening-possession, 20-yard TD pass to Gilchrist for the 7-0 lead. The Knights opened a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter as senior running back Jake Johnson scored on a 10-yard run. He carried 27 times for 127 yards.

Bergenfield, which lost 14-year coach Rob Violante in a May car crash in New York, played significantly better in the second half after managing just nine yards in the first two quarters.

“It was a Game 1,” Straub said. “I may get people complaining to me, but I do believe there’s a little bit of a difference between the Super Football Conference and the NJIC. They’re a Group 3 school, and they were big and physical, and tough. And we made a couple of plays when we had to.”

Prior to kickoff, Violante was honored with a moment of silence.

“Everybody was shocked at first,” Duran said of Violante’s death. “It happens, life’s unfortunate, but we just have to do our best and move on and honor our coach in any way that we can. And I believe he’s watching over us and helping us every moment.”

Kenny’s 20-yard TD pass to Gilchrist came on a fourth-and-9 and capped a game-opening, 13-play, 66-yard drive.

But the second half, we played much better.”

“I give them all the credit in the world with what they’re dealing with, with coach Violante,” Straub said of Bergenfield. “It’s a terrible tragedy and they’re trying to survive right now, and I know they have a tough schedule coming up. But those kids fought right to the last play of the game, and I thought that was a credit to the coaches.”
